Hatch Medical Joint Venture Signs Global Pact with Medical Device Technologies

Atlanta, Georgia – Medical device incubator and technology brokerage firm, Hatch Medical, L.L.C. recently announced that Medical Device Technologies, Inc. (MD TECH) has licensed the manufacturing and global distribution rights to the FlatCath™ Hemodialysis Catheter technology.  Additional details of the agreement were unavailable.

FlatCath, L.L.C. is a joint venture between Hatch Medical and physician inventor, Aubrey Palestrant, M.D.  FlatCath was formed to develop and market Dr. Palestrant’s novel vascular access technology platform.  Initial commercial efforts will focus on devices utilizing the FlatCath™ technology in chronic and acute hemodialysis catheters.

“We are pleased to once again partner with an organization that is so highly focused and committed to bringing to market differentiated and clinically beneficial technologies.  The FlatCath™ innovation combined with MD TECH’s manufacturing expertise and breadth of global distribution places us on the path to significantly impact this market segment,” commented Steven Hvozda, Executive Vice President, Hatch Medical.

FlatCath™ embodies proprietary technology and design elements that are intended to improve catheter patency and longevity while minimizing vessel trauma and thrombus formation.  Large, multi-lumen catheters are regularly placed into the venous system to perform hemodialysis, infusion or aspiration.  Catheter placement often creates turbulence and sluggish blood flow resulting in a myriad of patient-related health concerns.  The FlatCath™ technology facilitates a significantly reduced cross-sectional catheter profile within a blood vessel when the catheter is not in use.  Consequently, this exceptional design reduces the likelihood of catheter-based complications resulting from thrombus formation.

“In recent years, industry has combated sub-optimal hemodialysis catheter performance by increasing overall catheter profile---a paradox of curing one complication with the introduction of another.  The design elements of FlatCath™ will yield the first hemodialysis catheter that will be noticeably lowered in profile, yet provide significantly higher flows and reduced pressures during hemodialysis treatment,” commented Mr. Hvozda.   “Management and preservation of vascular access relies on many creative approaches.  We are convinced this innovation will play an important role in the evolution of the next generation of access catheters,” added Mr. Hvozda.

Aubrey Palestrant, M.D., physician and inventor commented, “Venous access is a vital aspect of survival for many patients with chronic diseases that require long term venous infusions or dialysis.   FlatCath is the first catheter design that specifically addresses the complex clinical and hemodynamic issues peculiar to venous access.  These innovative catheters will have a major impact on what is now considered to be the standard of care in vascular access catheter technology.”

Michael Ryan, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Medical Device Technologies, Inc., commented, “FlatCath™ is an exciting new technology and an evolutionary step forward in both improving hemodialysis outcomes and expanding the longevity of vascular access catheters.   We are excited to partner with Hatch Medical and FlatCath on this innovative technology, and look forward to driving its success in the market.”

MD TECH is a subsidiary of American Medical Instrument Holdings (AMIH), an operating-oriented private equity firm focused exclusively on the healthcare industry.
